According to Forbes Magazine, a “brand” is what your prospect thinks of when he or she hears your “brand name.”  It’s everything the public thinks it knows about your name brand offering—both factual (e.g. It comes in a robin’s-egg-blue box), and emotional (e.g. It’s romantic).  Your “brand name” exists objectively; people can see it.  It’s fixed.  But your “brand” exists only in someone’s mind. It is easy to confuse your “brand name” and your “brand.” To simplify the concept, think if your “brand” as a perceived impression or feeling that supports your “brand name”.

Instagram’s New Clothes

Many years ago, Hans Christian Anderson wrote the story of “The Emperor’s New Clothes.”  In the story, supposed ‘weavers’ promise an emperor a new suit of clothes that is invisible to those who are unfit for their positions, stupid, or incompetent. In reality, the ‘weavers’ had simply mimed creating the suit and dressing the emperor, truly “dressing” him in nothing at all.

As the Emperor paraded through town the townspeople did not see any clothes, but they were afraid if they didn’t comment that they would seem unfit.  Everyone talked about all the new colors and fine fabrics in his suit, but there wasn’t anything there.

Social Media is accessible everywhere. It is no longer a second sister to mainstream media. Your employees will post to their social channels with or without your guidelines. So my suggestion is to draw them up now, and share them with your employees before it’s too late.

It is important for organizations and companies to keep track of what their members and employees are tweeting and posting about especially on issues that pertain to the workplace. Will you be hampering their rights to freely post?  Should you just ban them from accessing their social media sites?
